Why a MID meter is mandatory

Anyone supplying renewable electricity to transport can have it registered in the Register Energy for Transport (REV) of the Dutch Emissions Authority. For every kilogram of CO₂ emission reduction achieved in the chain, one Emission Reduction Unit (ERE) is credited. Fuel suppliers need those units to meet their fuel transition obligation and buy them; that is where the proceeds of registration come from.

Such a registration stands or falls with the substantiation: the delivery must be demonstrable with a measurement that is legally sound. The regulation therefore requires a meter that complies with the European Measuring Instruments Directive — the MID — and that is built into the charge point at the factory.

A charge point without a MID-certified meter often measures fine for personal insight, but the measurement is not suitable as a basis for registration. That is why the question "can I register with this charge point?" stands or falls with the meter the manufacturer has built in — not with the brand or the price.
